Brazilian deepwater drilling specialist Ventura Offshore has been appointed to market a deepwater drillship on behalf of Eldorado Drilling, taking on a commercial management role for the asset under an agreement that runs until beyond the planned merger of Eldorado and Vantage Drilling.
The marketing arrangement gives Ventura Offshore responsibility for securing new contracts for the rig and managing client relationships during the transition period, drawing on the company’s established position in Brazil’s deepwater drilling market and its relationships with Petrobras and other operators active in the Santos and Campos basins.
The appointment comes as the offshore drilling sector undergoes a significant wave of consolidation. Transocean completed its merger with Valaris earlier in 2026, creating the world’s largest offshore drilling contractor with a combined fleet of 73 rigs. The planned combination of Eldorado and Vantage Drilling is part of the same broader trend, with smaller and mid-sized drilling contractors seeking scale and financial strength in a market where high-specification deepwater assets command premium dayrates but capital requirements for fleet maintenance and newbuild programmes are substantial.
Ventura Offshore has itself been actively managing its own fleet through a period of busy contracting activity. The company’s DS Carolina drillship completed a 135-day extension with Petrobras through September 2026, following which the rig was due to transition into its previously contracted Sepia-Atapu campaign, with mobilisation now rescheduled to January 2027. The SSV Victoria semi-submersible, which had been working on Petrobras’s Buzios 6 development in the Santos Basin, was under a Managed Pressure Drilling contract from Weatherford International and has been separately contracted for further work in the basin. The Atlantic Zonda, a managed vessel for which Ventura receives operating fees, separately generated $145 million in additional backlog in the first half of 2026.
The decision to take on the Eldorado rig marketing role reflects Ventura Offshore’s growing commercial ambitions beyond its own fleet. The company, founded in 2021 and backed by private equity investors with deep experience in the Brazilian offshore sector, has built a track record of complex contract management and client servicing that positions it as a credible intermediary for asset owners seeking representation in one of the world’s most active deepwater markets.
Brazil’s deepwater sector remains one of the most significant drilling markets in the world. Petrobras has earmarked the largest share of its $111 billion five-year investment plan for oil and gas, with deepwater pre-salt development in the Santos Basin accounting for the bulk of drilling demand. For owners of deepwater assets seeking exposure to that market, a marketing partnership with an established Brazilian drilling operator with Petrobras relationships represents a commercially logical approach during a period of ownership transition.
