Türkiye reaches ‘historic production level’ at Sakarya gas field: Turkish energy minister

Baku, April 29, AZERTAC

Türkiye has reached a “historic production level” of 4.5 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas from the country’s Black Sea Sakarya gas field, Anadolu Agency reports citing Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.

In his address to students at Istanbul’s Ibn Haldun University, Bayraktar stated that this historic high means that Türkiye can meet the gas needs of 1.8 million homes from local production.

Nonetheless, Türkiye wants to increase the daily output from the Sakarya gas field from its present level of 3.7 mcm to 10 million mcm in the next production phase.

“In the next few years, we will supply all the gas needs for households that you’re using for heating, cooking, or maybe in your dormitory from this Sakarya Gas Field,” he said.

Bayraktar promised to provide further details about any upcoming discoveries soon.

The country’s active exploration has reaped benefits, including the detection of a large oil reserve in the Gabar region of the eastern Sirnak province following the natural gas discovery in the Black Sea.

This discovery in Gabar has yielded 40,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), but this volume will increase to 100,00 bpd so Türkiye can meet 20% of its crude oil needs in 2025 from its own resources, he said.
