SSE starts operations at first Italian wind farm

SSE’s first operational renewable energy asset in Italy, the 17.3MW Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm in Puglia, has begun exporting electricity to the local grid.

The company said the five-turbine project is now delivering power under a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) signed with Microsoft in 2024.

SSE added that the renewable electricity generated at the site will support Microsoft’s carbon reduction strategy.

Construction of the wind farm in southern Italy began in early 2025, with around 70 construction roles supported during peak delivery.

The project marks a milestone in SSE’s expansion in Italy, where it has a secured pipeline of more than 600MW of onshore wind developments.

SSE’s operational onshore wind capacity across southern Europe now stands at 109MW, with a further 55MW under construction across three sites in Spain and Italy.

This includes a 10MW wind farm currently under construction in Puglia.

Colin Spain, director of PPAs at SSE Renewables, said: “We’re delighted to have reached commercial operations on our first onshore wind farm in Italy, the combined Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm in Puglia.

“Since construction began in 2025, our teams and contractors have worked safely and expertly to bring new renewable electricity capacity online.

“We’re also pleased that the site is now delivering under the long-term Corporate Power Purchase Agreement with Microsoft for the power generated at the site.

“This agreement shows how long-term corporate offtake supports new capacity in Italy and Microsoft’s carbon reduction strategy.”
