Seadrill lands $480m drillship extension with Petrobras

New York-listed driller Seadrill has secured a long-term extension for its ultra-deepwater drillship West Polaris, keeping the rig working for Petrobras offshore Brazil into the next decade.

The 1,095-day extension covers continued operations at the Búzios field in the Santos Basin and is set to begin in direct continuation of the current contract in January 2028.

The deal adds around $480m to Seadrill’s backlog, while dayrates for the ongoing programme have also been firmed up.

The 2000-built rig will earn $409,200 per day from April 2026 through March 2027, rising to $454,700 per day from April 2027 until mid-January 2028.

Seadrill chief executive Samir Ali said the award supports long-term utilisation for a mature unit while reinforcing ties with a key client.
