Petronas Lines Up Drillship to Appraise Megah Malaysia’s Largest Oil Discovery in 20 Years

Petronas is preparing to begin drilling an appraisal well on the Megah discovery offshore Sabah, Malaysia’s largest oil find in more than two decades, with the Noble Viking drillship contracted for the campaign and fast-track development options already under active evaluation.

The Megah-1 exploration well was drilled in 2025 and confirmed estimated resources of between 200 million and 300 million barrels of oil in an ultra-deepwater block offshore Sabah, East Malaysia. Petronas wasted little time in moving the project toward appraisal, commencing early development work in January 2026 and beginning an FPSO procurement process in the same period as development planning was initiated.

Noble Corporation’s Noble Viking drillship, formerly the Maersk Viking, has been assigned to the Megah-2 appraisal well. The well will test whether the resource size and reservoir quality confirmed at Megah-1 can be extended and clarified sufficiently to support a development decision, with Petronas’s own timeline indicating it is targeting a fast-track path to production rather than a conventional multi-year appraisal campaign.

Supporting activity has been advancing across multiple fronts. TGS confirmed on 1 October 2026 that it had been awarded a seismic reprocessing contract on the Megah discovery area offshore Sabah, with the work intended to advance Petronas’s understanding of the subsurface and sharpen development planning. TGS executive vice president of multi-client David Hajovsky said the contract would help advance Petronas’s plans for the country’s largest discovery in more than 20 years. Separately, Fugro confirmed on 28 September 2026 that it had completed an ultra-deepwater autonomous underwater vehicle geohazard site survey for Petronas Carigali covering both the proposed Megah and Limbayong field development areas offshore Sabah, integrating advanced technologies with real-time remote operations to deliver faster insights and more efficient execution.

The Limbayong field, which is being developed in parallel with Megah’s appraisal programme, has received a final investment decision from Petronas and is expected to be produced via the Excalibur cylindrical FPSO that MISC, the Petronas shipping subsidiary, recently acquired. The simultaneous advancement of Limbayong to FID while Megah appraisal drilling is being prepared reflects Petronas’s confidence in the wider Sabah deepwater basin and its ambition to develop the area as a new production hub.

The Megah discovery is located in the same ultra-deepwater Sabah region where TotalEnergies is preparing to drill the Jambuk-1 wildcat on Block 2K, targeting a large prospect on the Oligo-Miocene carbonate trend. The convergence of two major deepwater drilling campaigns from two different operators in the same basin in the same period reflects the growing consensus that offshore Sabah is one of the most commercially significant underexplored deepwater provinces in Asia.

For Petronas, a successful Megah appraisal that confirms the resource at the upper end of its estimated range would add a transformational new development to its domestic portfolio at a time when Malaysia is managing a structural decline in production from its mature offshore fields and seeking new sources of supply to sustain its LNG export commitments and meet growing domestic energy demand.
