Indonesia: TGS Launches South Papua 2D-cubed project enhanced by machine learning

TGS

TGS, a leading global provider of energy data and intelligence, has announced the launch of a new 237,700 sq km 2D-cubed project in offshore South Papua, Indonesia.

The South Papua 2D-cubed project is a multi-client initiative designed to generate a regional-scale 3D seismic volume by integrating legacy 2D and 3D datasets across the offshore South Papua region. Leveraging TGS’ proprietary 2D-cubed structurally conformable interpolation technology, the project will transform existing seismic data into a coherent 3D volume to support regional screening and exploration evaluation. The project spans several underexplored frontier basins and covers approximately 237,700 square kilometers. It lies within a region surrounded by proven hydrocarbon systems, including the Abadi (Masela) field. Exploration activity in the area has increased in recent years, with major oil and gas companies pursuing new opportunities.

To enhance data quality, the project incorporates machine learning (ML) technologies throughout the processing workflow, one of the key products of TGS’ digital solutions.  ML-based denoise algorithms are applied to input datasets to improve signal fidelity, while ML-driven quality control processes support early-stage data conditioning. These workflows increase processing efficiency and optimize input data before interpolation, enabling a higher-quality 2D-cubed volume.

The South Papua 2D-cubed dataset also provides strategic regional continuity by tying together TGS’ existing West Berau 2D-cubed and Timor-Leste 2D-cubed projects. This creates an expanded regional framework for basin-scale exploration evaluation across eastern Indonesia and the Timor Sea region.

David Hajovsky, Executive Vice President, Multi-Client at TGS, said: ‘This project reflects TGS’ commitment to supporting exploration in frontier basins through innovative data solutions. By combining 2D-cubed technology with machine learning workflows, we enhance the quality and value of legacy seismic data. The South Papua 2D-cubed project provides a powerful regional screening tool that supports identification of structural and stratigraphic opportunities across this highly prospective yet underexplored region.’
