Gas production begins at Azerbaijan’s giant ACG oil field

UK-based oil company bp has started producing non-associated gas at the Azeri–Chirag–Gunashli (ACG) field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, one of the world’s largest oil fields.

This is the first time gas has been produced commercially from the field. The first well was drilled from the West Chirag platform into two gas-bearing layers, the shallower Qirmaki Upper Sand and the deeper Qirmaki Lower Sand, both located below the producing oil reservoirs.

The well confirmed the presence of gas in the upper layer and found high-pressure gas in the lower one. The initial operations focus on the lower reservoir for well and reservoir testing. Gas and condensate will be directed to the Sangachal Terminal through existing infrastructure.

The field is estimated to contain around 4 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas, with total potential resources of up to 6 trillion cubic feet.

It is operated by bp and its partners are Azerbaijan’s SOCAR, Hungary’s MOL, Japan’s INPEX, US-based ExxonMobil, Türkiye’s TPAO and India’s ONGC Videsh.
