No injuries reported from Sunday’s fire on West Lutong Vent asset off the coast of Sarawak

A fire broke out on Sunday at a facility offshore Sarawak, East Malaysia, operated by a subsidiary of national energy behemoth Petronas.

While the cause of the blaze is under investigation, local media The Sun in a YouTube post attributed the incident to a lightning strike.

Vestigo Petroleum, a subsidiary of national upstream company Petronas Carigali, on Monday confirmed that a fire occurred at approximately 14:00 (06:00 GMT) on Sunday at its West Lutong Vent A (WLV-A) facility offshore Sarawak.

“There were no injuries or personnel affected, and the incident posed no immediate threat to the surrounding communities and environment,” said Vestigo.

“The situation has been brought under control, and the cause of fire is still under investigation.”

The company added it is working closely with relevant authorities and has taken necessary precautionary measures to manage the risk of exposure.

Vestigo stressed it remains fully committed to the safety of its people, protecting the environment and maintaining the integrity of its operations.

The Petronas subsidiary specialises in unlocking and maximising the economic value of small, marginal and mature oil and gas fields offshore Malaysia.
