Aker BP to deploy Armada Edge data center on Norwegian oil rig

Follows recent ageement between Armada and Aker-backed Nscale

Oil company Aker BP is to deploy a containerized Edge data center on an oil rig.

Edge data center firm Armada this week announced an agreement with Aker BP to deploy Armada’s Galleon modular data center for use in an offshore drilling environment on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Armada will deliver a Galleon designed to operate in offshore conditions, enabling local processing and analysis of drilling and operational data directly on the rig.

Oslo-based Aker BP explores for and produces oil and gas on the Norwegian continental shelf. The company is jointly owned by Aker ASA, BP, and Nemesia, with the remaining shares listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

The company is the operator of the Valhall, Ula, Edvard Grieg/Ivar Aasen, Alvheim, and Skarv fields, and co-owner of the Johan Sverdrup field.

The deployment will begin with a single reference Galleon on one rig, which will act as a blueprint for Edge operations that can then be copied across additional assets.

Armada’s containerized data centers are designed to operate in challenging environments and can be custom-configured with CPUs, GPUs, and XPUs depending on the needs of a customer.

Armada has previously launched a smaller dedicated offering for oil rigs, called Beacons, alongside its larger Galleon pods.

Backed by Microsoft, the company has or is set to deploy modules with Nscale, UnityCloud, TampNet, Aramco, Newlab, Eclipse, the US Navy, and Alaska’s Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.

Norwegian investment firm Aker has previously invested in AI cloud and data center firm Nscale and has formed joint ventures with the company to develop data centers.
