Fugro wins Irish offshore wind survey contract

Fugro has secured a two-year contract with EirGrid to deliver marine mammal monitoring along Ireland’s south coast.

EirGrid said the work will support its Powering Up Offshore – South Coast programme to connect future offshore wind farms to the national grid.

The company added the programme is expected to connect about 900MW of renewable electricity, enough to power almost one million homes.

Fugro will install and maintain eight seabed moorings equipped with acoustic sensors to detect and record cetacean activity.

The moorings will help establish an environmental baseline and track seasonal and long-term changes, including harbour porpoise activity.

Fugro will recover and analyse the data, providing summary updates and annual reports on species presence and distribution.

“This contract builds on Fugro’s existing seven-year framework agreement with EirGrid and supports the responsible development of offshore renewable energy infrastructure,” said Andy Addleton, environmental service line manager for Europe and Africa at Fugro.

“For projects of this scale, having the right environmental information at the right time is critical.”
