Elizabeth Gaines has announced she will step down from her role as executive director at Fortescue, ending a 13-year stint at the mining giant.
Gaines has been described as making an “extraordinary contribution” to the company over the last decade, most notably during her four-year tenure as chief executive officer in which she oversaw huge gains in iron ore operations.
The 62-year-old has also been a pivotal force in the transition to green energy, acting as both ambassador and advocate for Fortescue’s 2030 Real Zero strategy to decarbonise mining operations.
“Elizabeth has been one of the highly impactful leaders that built Fortescue’s strong and proud history, serving this company with distinction,” Fortescue founder Andrew Forrest said in a statement.
“She has helped drive the inexorable march of Fortescue, proving what others say is impossible, delivering for shareholders while helping set the course for our next great chapter: leading the world in decarbonising technology, energy and heavy industry.”
Gaines will officially leave her role at the end of June.
Fortescue also announced the appointment of Sigrid Kaag to the board as non-executive director, bringing with her a 35-year career in international affairs, trade and finance at both national and international level.
Kaag has served in senior roles in national government, including as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Netherlands.
It’s understood the move brings significant expertise in European decision-making, risk and crisis management and sustainable finance.
“Sigrid is an outstanding global leader with deep diplomatic expertise and a strong understanding of the Middle East, North Africa and European energy markets,” Forrest said.
“Her experience across governments, international institutions and multilateral finance will bring valuable perspective to Fortescue as we continue to grow, diversify and advance out leadership in delivering green solutions and eliminating fossil fuels from heavy industry.”
